November 24, 1932

Bill Squires grows up in South Boston and Arlington, becomes an All-America runner at Notre Dame University, marries Sally Ann Kuhn in 1956, and moves to Melrose, Quincy, Wakefield, Arlington, and Reading. He goes on to coach at Wakefield High School, Boston State College, and the University of Massachusetts Boston, but is best known for coaching the Greater Boston Track Club beginning in 1973. According to GBTC member Amby Burfoot, “Bill Squires turned a bunch of wacky, individualistic Boston runners into marathon elites in part because he shared the same traits – he’s wacky and individualistic.” Squires dies on June 30, 2022.
